(Re)framing Devices

The dream has always been to build a replica of Thoreau’s cabin. The reality is that Thoreau cut down trees with an ax and hand-crafted six-by-six beams for his frame. Having no easy access to large White pines or the arm strength to hew and plane, I’m using lumber from the home improvement store and power tools. I am trying to stay faithful to the original dimensions. Using the process of building this structure as material for writing. Approaching the hours I am able to carve out to work on this project as sacred time in solitude so that I am more grounded and present with my family, co-workers, and community. A reframing of the original project but, thus far, the progress has been gratifying—physically, mentally, and spiritually.
